Statoil, Vattenfall and Gasunie have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to evaluate the possibilities of converting Vattenfall’s gas power plant Magnum in the Netherlands into a hydrogen-powered plant. The potential CO2 emission reduction is 4 million tons of CO2 per year. This is equivalent to emissions from more than 2 million cars.
For Vattenfall, hydrogen technology is an essential element for more climate protection and contributes to enabling a fossil-free life within a generation. Together with the Swedish steel group SSAB and the mining group LKAB, Vattenfall is currently building the world’s first pilot plant for fossil-free steel production using hydrogen in Luleå in northern Sweden. Under the agreement, Vattenfall will be one of the first users of Windcat’s hydrogen-powered vessels, currently being developed. The IJmuiden-headquartered vessel operator is working with CMB Technologies on the vessel development, which is expected to be completed by the third quarter of 2020.
In this plant, a tonne of fossil-free steel will be produced from raw iron ore every hour. By means of hydrogen that Vattenfall contributes to the process, the emissions take the form of water vapour instead of the 1.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide otherwise generated by every tonne of steel.
Shell, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), Vattenfall and municipal company Wärme Hamburg are exploring a plan to jointly produce hydrogen from wind and solar power at the Hamburg-Moorburg power plant site and utilise it in its vicinity. To this end, the four companies have signed a letter of intent.
Operational since 2014, the three-unit plant is owned and operated by Nuon, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Vattenfall. When opened, the project will replace carbon emissions with water vapour, by switching natural gas for hydrogen. The project aims to convert one of the three units at the power plant to hydrogen by 2023.
